KiwiDesign RGB Vertical Charging Stand for Quest 3/Quest 2/Quest Pro – Review

Charging stations are a nice extra to get when buying a VR headset. It keeps things tidy, makes charging that little bit easier, and can look nice. So when the KiwiDesign RGB Vertical Charging Stand for Quest 3/Quest 2/Quest Pro came along, I thought I’d try it out.

Clip Together and Stand

The KiwiDesign RGB Vertical Charging Stand took me about one minute to assemble. Opening up the box revealed only a few pieces, which clipped together easily. The instructions on the box were simple, aside from missing where the flexible USB arm should go. Fortunately, it was both fairly obvious, and in the comprehensive instruction manual. The USB-C charging arm goes into the side of the charging stand, while the USB-C connector goes into the VR headset.

Despite being made of plastic, the charging stand feels solidly built when clipped together. The base is heavy too, so I have no concerns about it getting knocked over while the headset is on it, unlike some cheaper stands.

The USB-C charging cable needs to be inserted in the back, but it’s worth noting that this is not included. I assume it’s intended to use the one that comes with your Meta Quest 2/3/Pro.

Colorful Lights

As you’d expect with RGB in the name, the KiwiDesign RGB Vertical Charging Stand has an LED line that can light up in seven colors; red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue, and violet. You can use two discrete buttons to select one of two patterns where it changes between these, or you can set it to any of them as a single color. Turning it off completely is an option too. Each single color mode can be set to either a solid light or a pulsing light at one of five brightness levels.

It’s nice that you can have a very eye-catching and active RGB cycle, a more subdued low brightness in the color of your choosing, or something in between. They all look nice, but I’ve been mostly keeping it on a low-brightness blue, while it may look nice as a bright RGB cycling pulse for a streamer’s background.

Charging Up

Moving onto the main function, I primarily tested the KiwiDesign RGB Vertical Charging Stand for Quest 3/Quest 2/Quest Pro with a Meta Quest 2 with the KiwiDesign Upgraded Elite Strap attached.

As mentioned, the charging arm stays with the stand, while the connector stays in the VR headset. When the VR headset is turned off, it can be put onto the charging stand and as long as it’s placed correctly, it will automatically connect and start charging. It’s a magnetic connector and snaps into place easily.

The controllers hang on the arms below the platform for the VR headset. This is just a place to keep them, but they worked without any problems and were easy enough to use.

This does feel designed more for the Meta Quest 3 than it’s predecesor. The charging port on the Meta Quest 2 is lower, so it needs to come further forward and slightly to the side on the stand so that the flexible charging arm doesn’t come out. The platform for the backstrap of the headset supports it well when further forward and it’s still mostly on the main headset platform and completely secure, but this does block the view of the RGB a little.

As a note, while it’s officially called the KiwiDesign RGB Vertical Charging Stand for Quest 3/Quest 2/Quest Pro, unofficially it seems to work with the Pico 4 VR headset. Similarly to the Meta Quest 2, it needs to come forward slightly. As always when using chargers not designed for a device, I can tell you it worked for me, but cannot confirm safe compatibility.

Verdict

The KiwiDesign RGB Vertical Charging Stand for Quest 3/Quest 2/Quest Pro works well as a stand and charger. While it’s perhaps more suited as a Meta Quest 3 accessory, it works well, it’s secure, and it helps to keep things tidy while charging.
