Hentai Prison, or simply HenPri, is an adult noir visual novel released by Qruppo back in January 2022 and brought to international audiences in 2025. Set inside Japan’s fictional ninth correctional precinct, it tells the story of a boy incarcerated for his use of his exhibitionism as an art form. The game is technically a sequel to Qruppo’s 2019 title NUKITASHI 2, a game set on the promiscuous Seiran Island.
As someone well acquainted with media that helps you sleep well at night, Hentai Prison’s title naturally stuck out to me. Besides being a Qruppo game, which by itself gives a good impression due to their track record with the NUKITASHI series, I was intrigued by the stark change in setting despite it being a sequel title. Moreover, at the time of writing, it boasted an average reading time of 60 hours amongst the users of the Visual Novel Database, or VNDB for short. How can a visual novel with Hentai literally stuck to its name have so much content? And looking at the tags, it’s a pure love story with a multiple-route mystery!? That’s super weird. I’m all in, balls deep even!

Laying it All Bare
Shuichiro Minato is your typical everyday perverted teenager, at least in his mind; he’s a guy who loves indulging in his exhibitionist tendencies, framing it as his form of artistic expression. He feels that wearing his birthday suit in public is nothing out of the ordinary—in fact, he thinks that the act of wearing clothes itself is weird, similar to how you’d find it weird if someone pooped in a urinal. And so one day, after repeated tussles with the authorities, he finally finds himself standing on a podium in front of the representatives of Japan’s judicial system. The crime? Public indecency and obstruction of justice by assaulting a police officer. Although he tries his best to explain his perfectly reasonable actions, the jury finds it insufficient and sentences him to a minimum of 10 years in prison.
Following the decision, Shuichiro is promptly shipped off to Tulip Prison, a correctional precinct known to be the home of prisoners deemed “beyond redemption”. Upon arriving, he is welcomed by a group of guards who look at him as if he is below trash. These people, called correctional officers, explain to them that their life in prison was going to be a nightmare, with each and every one of them subject to the whims of the prison guards. If they find the prisoner’s actions offensive or to be breaking the rules, they will not hesitate to punish them with physically taxing tasks or, if necessary, with extreme violence. Safe to say, the rights they enjoyed while being free did not apply within the precinct’s grounds. With his freedom of expression restricted, what will become of Shuichiro, a.k.a. Exhibitman?
With the odds greatly stacked against him, here begins Shuichiro’s journey to make it in the worst prison in the country.
Naughty People Need Correction!
With Hentai Prison being set in, well, a prison, its premise revolves around Shuichiro’s journey to becoming an ideal inmate in Tulip Prison. By staying away from signs of danger and keeping mostly to himself, his ten-year sentence should be a breeze! Unfortunately, the naked truth is far crueler than he expected—with the inmates consisting of people deemed largely irredeemable, it’s no surprise that after only a few days, our favorite exhibitionist finds himself on the radar of criminals starved for entertainment. He starts getting bullied, being subject to physical assault, humiliation, and slander. Inmates frame him for rule violations, frequently landing him in situations where the prison guards punish him with unreasonable exercise, forced labor, or deprivation of daily necessities. It’s a pretty desperate situation! With both his fellow inmates and the guards out to get him, there is only one path forward for Shuichiro—he needs to outwit his enemies while avoiding punishment altogether.
This is where the main appeal of the visual novel comes from. By combining Shuichiro’s desperate situation with the comedic writing style unique to Qruppo titles, Hentai Prison creates a weirdly entertaining noir story that, despite using crude toilet language, puts itself in scenarios where its prison-inspired story elements can shine and be taken seriously. Yet because Shuichiro is a pretty young protagonist, the narrative is littered with notes of self-discovery and hope amidst the cold and grueling reality of his prison life. It feels incredibly ironic that in his incarceration, he learns more about himself and his own fetish. That’s the kind of roller coaster ride Hentai Prison offers its readers.
Before proceeding though, a fair warning: Hentai Prison is a visual novel that puts emphasis on its adult content. Although tame for the most part, if you’re sensitive to depictions of violence and sexual humor of all kinds, then this is not a game for you. There is no possible way to read this in a satisfying way without installing the adult content, so keep that in mind before purchasing the product.
Birds Of The Same Feather Fuck Together
In a prison filled with sex criminals of varying degrees of degeneracy, it stands to reason that most of the cast would be pretty unique in their tendencies and motivations. Hentai Prison has a pretty big ensemble cast that, despite most of them not having any sprites, are pretty memorable because of their quips and sexual interests. Honestly, I’m not a fan of haphazardly inserted ensemble dialogue in visual novels, but the way this visual novel makes some of them say the most random thing that’s only a tad relevant to an ongoing discussion makes me crack up like nothing else. Off the top of my head, there’s a guy named BO Snake whose lines are always related to his fixation on smells and god, his lines are bad for the imagination.
With such a colorful cast, Hentai Prison makes full use of this by incorporating a very effective sound design technique—background voices. Similar to how sex scenes in newer visual novels tend to have a breathing track playing in the background, Hentai Prison inserts relevant mundane dialogue as voice clips that do not display in its ADV textbox. This makes it so that readers, in the interest of their time management, can make the decision of whether to pay attention to the background dialogue or not themselves. It’s a pretty interesting way of dealing with the possibility of having a “bloated” body of text, a problem that a lot of slice-of-life visual novels encounter that hurt the pacing of their stories. If interested, they can always access the background line through the text log, a feature that I’ve seldom seen in other visual novels that incorporate a similar technique.
As a reader, I greatly enjoyed the novelty of picking up random voices in the background. It helps with the immersion, especially considering how many people are incarcerated in Tulip Prison. A quick tip: if you pay attention close enough, you’ll even start to notice the ensemble cast start grouping up into cliques as the story progresses because of how their sexual interests align. That’s some good attention to detail if anything!
Love is a Prison
Speaking of the cast, nothing’s more important in an adult visual novel like Hentai Prison than its heroines, and boy do they make it easy to choose which you want to pursue! While there are unlock requirements for some content, Hentai Prison lets you choose at the end of the common route whose route you want to go for by presenting you with a literal route selection screen.
There are three heroines routes to choose from, as well as an additional route, each with their own unique endings; their routes are linear in nature, which means that there are no choices to make besides the initial route selection. Be aware that there is are some important extra scenes to unlock outside of the route though, as explained in our guide/walkthrough.
As for the routes themselves, they were great reads. Each heroine had struggles that were properly conveyed and established through fragments you can pick up the more you read their story. I felt like the scenes where they were vulnerable were well placed within the context of Shuichiro’s struggle against the main antagonist of the route, and it felt rewarding to pay attention to little details that got brought up again later in the plot. It’s one of those visual novels where I felt that my investment into the story was being properly paid off, with interest too! From the start until the end, I felt compelled to keep reading, even at the cost of some shuteye. It was just that exciting.
Tips to Make People Happy Even Lolicons Can Understand
The downside of making a noir comedy like Hentai Prison is that despite the overwhelming desperation of its setting, because of the comedic way it uses sex as a motif and the characters’ weird tendencies, a lot of story elements that push the narrative are hard to take seriously. Take for example the idea of guards patrolling the vicinity—while the protagonist might get noticed due to their actions, they can casually shrug it off by mixing a bit of wordplay in their conversation with them. These kinds of convenient plot devices are, of course, very common in anime-related media (I’m looking at you, Kirito Kazugaya who just happened to be a genius coder) but because they’re so incredulously placed there, it cheapens the overall grit and difficulty of their journey to the ending which can take you away from the immersion.
Now, that only really applies as a complaint if you take Hentai Prison as more of a drama than a comedy. But honestly, I wouldn’t be able to blame anyone who would because when this visual novel ramps up in emotion, it does it really well. The contrast between its comedic moments and heartfelt ones does a good job of making things like sadness shine better; it feels lonely whenever Shuichiro ends up alone in the story. You can really feel the impact the cast has because of how prominent their presence is within the text.
I Can’t Believe My Eroge Character is This Dumb and Horny!
Speaking of Shuichiro, the way they gave him a blank personality made the story arcs incredibly satisfying to read. Aside from having heroines with a distinct character, Shuichiro himself has story arcs within the routes that essentially build him as a person bit by bit. The irony of him learning more about himself in prison is pretty funny, but the way he finds love, the way he discovers joys beyond exhibitionism, and how he finds a purpose greater than himself were all cathartic moments to experience. It’s probably because of how he exudes a form of childish innocence—while a schemer for most of the plot, he also has little to no idea how to properly interact with others. It makes for pretty funny and entertaining situations overall.
This isn’t limited to Shuichiro, as Hentai Prison’s antagonists themselves have ample enough screen time to properly build their characters, their motivations, and their goals throughout the story. Although they don’t get revealed in their entirety in just one route, I was given enough details while reading to humanize them anyway, which makes for pretty interesting combinations of feelings whenever the protagonists triumph against them. With them having their own story arcs as well, you’d be hard-pressed to find a character that wasn’t treated with proper love during their development process.
Except maybe Sakamogi. I wanted more screen time for our cute violet-haired ninja.
Are Assholes Really Mean or Are They Just Clenched?
Moving on from the story, let’s discuss the adult content in Hentai Prison. Despite the title being the clearest it’s ever going to be, the visual novel actually betrays expectations. Beyond a few short scenes with mandatory examinations that show the genital area, the first real sex scene only happens well into the first heroine route you choose. With the length of the game as it is, most readers will find themselves in one after around 15 hours of reading. Whether that’s a good thing or not depends on the individual, but personally, given the motifs of the game, it was really interesting putting it that late into the story. It gives the feeling that the characters are very much human themselves, despite being aggressively branded as sexual degenerates.
The spacing between scenes does get shorter the more you progress into a route though. But by that time, the pacing’s already well-established, with the sex scenes serving more of a fanservice break than anything. Sometimes it even functions as a plot device! Regardless, in my experience, they’re welcome additions with how they don’t break the pacing of the text. They’re quaint and sweet, with a few fetishes littered in between. I mention fetishes, but the sex is pretty tame in the visual novel. The scenes are more emotionally driven than anything, which makes them pretty comfortable reads.
In fact, they respect the flow of the story so much that they squeeze in around seven adult scenes in the post-credits scenarios instead of mid-plot. Talk about bonus content!
PLAP PLAP PLAP GET NUKITASHI’D
The last thing I’d like to talk about is its relationship with the prequel series, NUKITASHI. As someone who hasn’t read the first two games myself, I was a little bit nervous going into the visual novel about how I wouldn’t be able to fully appreciate it given my lack of background. But as it stands, despite serving as a straight-up sequel chronologically and having multiple references to Seiran Island, the relationship with NUKITASHI is mostly in the setting of Hentai Prison. They’re set in the same world, with more than one character from the Nukitashi cast making an appearance. There’s literally a character here that explicitly mentions being part of Seiran Island’s SS committee!
For those who might not want to read the first two games, don’t worry. Personally, it didn’t detract from my experience at all. Rather than making it worse, it made me greatly interested in the first two games and the events that happened within them. As a lore nerd, knowing that they directly influenced a lot of things that happen in the world of Hentai Prison kind of adds to the fun of it all. One of our team even reviewed both NUKITASHI titles and tells me they’re absolutely worth playing! But they’re not really necessary to enjoy HenPri as is. Fundamentally, HenPri stands on its own as an separate story.
Thinking about it, it’s possible that even those who didn’t like NUKITASHI might like Hentai Prison. Give it a try!
Art and Music
Hentai Prison features a total of 70 unique CGs, with copious amounts of them depicting sexual acts. The visual novel has a total of 25 H-scenes, with most of them happening between Shuichiro, the three heroines, and a few guest characters. As expected, the three main artists of the visual novel (Ichitoray, Kisaragi Chiyuki, and Ukimaru Tsubone) all worked on the previous NUKITASHI games as well. Their art styles are very recognizable even in Hentai Prison, with noticeably clear eyes and coloring that gives them a feeling of being a three-dimensional model. In contrast to NUKITASHI however, the colors are a lot more bleak, taking on more washed tones to reflect the prison setting of the game. One thing I really liked about their art was how much attention to detail the assets had, especially the prisoners. Their tight bodysuits, besides reflecting their body outline, also had noticeable folds reminiscent of latex suits that don’t exactly fit the wearer. Especially Noah’s sprite—her side-glancing sprite has a fold directly under her chest that’s hard to ignore!
Another thing I want to mention is the art direction in this game. Visual novels as a medium are limited in their presentation because of the format; they usually stick to sprites being displayed on a screen with text and a background. Hentai Prison, however, stands out because of how stylish it makes its presentation. Beyond the animated cut-ins and noir-like colored UI, the way they use the camera perspective to create non-linear movement for when characters walk or talk to someone in positions where they’re not exactly eye-level is pretty amazing. They make a lot of diagonal lines with these positions, giving it a feeling of being dynamic despite technically being static, unchanging assets.
Hentai Prison as a visual novel features a lot of tracks as well. There are 50 tracks in the Music section of the gallery, with a number of them being remixes of the same track. Despite this, however, I felt that the sound design for HenPri actually had a lot of character to it. Some of the tracks are clearly inspired by famous pieces such as The Entertainer, which is literally the same track as Scott Joplin’s famous piano rag. My personal favorites from the bunch are probably Just Run and Hyperventilation; I’m just a sucker for the heart-pounding ones.
Listening through them again, I’m surprised that there were this many tracks. Not because a lot of them weren’t memorable, but because the tracks didn’t feel disconnected. Thinking about it as I write this, it’s pretty amazing how much work can go into just creating an overall atmosphere that feels coherent when reading a visual novel. Hentai Prison definitely uses the tracks with purpose—they all blend together really well!
As a side note, it’s pretty funny how a lot of them are lighthearted in tone, given the prison setting. It sometimes made me feel like I was reading a school romance.
Verdict
Hentai Prison is a comedy visual novel with noir elements that makes use of the prison setting to create an unfamiliar feeling of tension amidst motifs of sex that are familiar sights to fans of the genre. The way it presents the characters as people with varying levels of sexual degeneracy pays great service to establishing how commonplace the interest in sex is even amongst the general populace, a topic that’s well-discussed in both community websites and academic papers. While generally light in tone, the visual novel gleans inspiration from prison stories and turns the game into a well-communicated message about our relationship with sex.
Although having incredibly convenient plot devices at times, Hentai Prison shines as a great read for people interested in a long read about self-discovery in the weirdest places. I recommend picking it up not only because of its novelty but also because of what messages its stories try to tell. It makes sense for something so heartfelt to come from an exhibitionist—we’re the most vulnerable when we’re naked, after all!
