LOVEPICAL-POPPY! – Review

You never know what life will throw at you. Tetsuya is reminded of this when the apartment that he and his younger sister live in goes up in flames. Perhaps even more surprising is how he suddenly ends up as a live-in dorm mother in a girls’ dormitory. LOVEPICAL-POPPY! follows the twists and turns of his new life, with plenty of zany moments along the way.

LOVEPICAL-POPPY! is a 2024 release by SMEE, the developers behind Fureraba ~Friend to Lover~, Making Lovers, Sugar Style, and HaremKingdom, and was brought to international audiences in late 2025 by Kagami Games. It’s a mix of sweet romance, lovable heroines, and comedic dialogue, with a strong emphasis on the latter.

Please note that LOVEPICAL-POPPY! is missing a significant amount of content on Steam. Therefore, it is necessary to install the off-site patch, as illustrated in our walkthrough/guide.

All of the roomers in Lovepical-Poppy!

Death Games at the Dorm

Hoshikuzu Dormitory is run by an eccentric old lady who runs ‘death games’ in her spare time and seems to cause chaos wherever she goes. It’s perhaps no surprise that she’d invite a man to take care of the residents in a girls’ dormitory (referred to in-game as ‘roomers’), even if he has a connection to the dorm through his sister Suzuka. With coincidences lining up and a little support, he manages to convince the occupants to let him work there, and soon earns the moniker of ‘Mom’ among the residents.

Most of the common route is centered around Tetsuya’s life in the dorm, where he takes care of the residents and sometimes works in the attached café. While most of the heroines are students, their school life is rarely seen, and Tetsuya himself is older, which helps LOVEPICAL-POPPY! to stand out among the more typical school life rom coms.

Seeing Nozomi's thoughts in Lovepical-Poppy!

Romance progresses quite slowly and is handled differently for each heroine, which I appreciated. Tetsuya takes his role seriously and spends a lot of time getting to know the roomers, without too many issues occurring due to being the lone male in a girls’ dorm. Occasional moments of noticing their charms or getting flustered aside, there’s much more time making sure they’re taking care of themselves, joking around with them, and participating in banter. We often get to see things from the heroines’ points of view too, with a system that allows the reader to click and reveal their thoughts on occasion and another which lets us select their room and see them talking inside. These work well to show the heroines slowly falling for Tetsuya and give us a little more insight into their true personalities.

The banter is one of the strong points of this visual novel, with lots of amusing back-and-forths. There are a good amount of absurd situations, which are nicely spaced out so they remain funny and don’t get tiresome. Still the comedy is never far away, with even more serious moments often getting interrupted by a silly comment or situation to break the tension, typically accompanied by a sound effect or quip.

Magnificent Main Heroines

There are four heroines and two sub-heroines in LOVEPICAL-POPPY! Each of them have their own charm points, and I enjoyed my time on every route, though I certainly had my favorites.

Nozomi is incredibly obvious with her affection and is the only heroine who makes it incredibly clear that she likes Tetsuya early on in the common route. This makes sense as she has a previous connection with him, and a certain reason why he’s important to her. She’s polite, always helpful, and has the absolute worst luck when trying to express her feelings, which ends up as a running joke. Her methods are clumsy and always fun to watch, if perhaps leading to some second-hand embarrassment while watching some of her actions.

Suzuka is Tetsuya’s blood-related little sister and incredibly close with him. They’ve lived alone together for a long time, so adjusting to dorm life is a challenge that she has to face. She’s very attached to Tetsuya and makes it obvious that she’s not exactly a fan of him receiving attention from the other roomers occasionally, but it’s handled nicely, without it becoming an obsession like some sister heroines. I didn’t even get the impression that she was interested in him romantically until the common route ended. She can be quite fun when making cutting remarks, but she’s usually quite gentle. I liked Suzuka as a heroine, but I did feel like a certain event in her route took away from an earlier impactful event, and there was very little impact of the taboo of being blood-related involved here, which was a pity, if not unexpected.

Tamaki is a good girl

Tamaki is a great example of gap moe. She’s tiny despite being one of the oldest students in the dorm, but is established as the dorm president that everyone relies on. She has a somewhat strict and serious personality, is incredibly competent, and everyone trusts her. But you soon find out that she envies Suzuka having a caring older brother, and she secretly wants to be pampered and taken care of. There are a lot of sweet moments of romance and getting closer in her route, and seeing her craving affection can be absolutely adorable.

Miu is a classic tsundere, slowly warming up to Tetsuya over time until she’s in full-on lovestruck mode. They have a rather poor first impression of each other, with Miu’s arrogance causing conflict. She’s a social media influencer, and I was surprised to find out that it’s not just used as an aesthetic of being popular and showing her as someone who wants to be the center of attention (although that’s true too), but it’s actually core to her character. It gets explored in an interesting way through her route, and there are relatable moments and familiar challenges that those who’ve done the same will be able to understand, mixed in with the sillier moments and romance.

Tamaki is my favorite of the main heroines by far. Cute is indeed justice, and while some other routes may have arguably included better character stories, Tamaki’s gap moe and need for affection made this the highlight for me.

Tanpopo is empty-headed

Super Sub-Heroines

The two sub-heroines have five chapters each instead of the seven that the main heroines have. Both are great, but are handled in very different ways.

Tanpopo is an incredibly easygoing gyaru with a unique way of speaking who, at first, appears not to have much going on upstairs. She’s high-energy and a little childish, but loves deeply and intensely, which makes for plenty of romantic moments. It’s a pity that she’s a sub-heroine as she livens up any scene that she appears in and mixes well with the other roomers, but she doesn’t get quite as many appearances. She does pop up more than a few times in other routes though, particularly in Miu’s.

The other sub-heroine, Ayako, stands out for a few reasons. She’s not only older than the other heroines, but slightly older than the protagonist (and she’s incredibly conscious of it). She manages the attached café and doesn’t live in the dorm, so we often see her separately from the roomers. I did think that Ayako falling for Tetsuya felt a little sudden and the escalation into intimacy somewhat unwarranted, but her route explores her character and a certain negative trait that she has particularly well, perhaps in-part since it almost exclusively focuses on her with very few appearances of any of the roomers.

Ayako and over dread over her age

I felt that Ayako had the better route of the sub-heroines when it came to exploring the character, but Tanpopo was far better when it came to creating a romantic atmosphere.

More generally speaking, the main and sub-heroine routes are mostly full of the same silliness as the common route, with plenty of romance and getting to know more about the heroine added in. They contain some small level of a serious character plot too, though how well this works is mixed. Miu’s character plot is perhaps the best example, which ties into her background, expands upon it, and is neatly distributed throughout the route. Tanpopo’s on the other hand, felt somewhat ham-fisted; while she has some nice moments of expressing her concerns throughout, her route pushes in an additional storyline right at the end. As a sub-heroine she did have two fewer chapters of space to work with (not that this harmed Ayako’s route), but the ending felt like a bit of a letdown. It’s lucky that she’s such a great heroine otherwise. The other character plots were more middling, some without many memorable plot events, but the focus here is on the comedy and romance, so I find it forgivable.

Your Daughter Calls Me Mommy Too

LOVEPICAL-POPPY! contains three H-scenes for each main heroine and two for each sub-heroine. Some of these are standard H-scenes, while others use a Click System. The way this works is you need to click on different body parts of the heroine, and it will display some relevant dialogue and reactions from the heroine. You can do this until an ‘insert’ button appears and click that, or you can continue until you’re forced to proceed. It’s a nice way to add a touch of interaction, but it can be disabled in the settings for anyone who wants to put the scenes on auto or just experience them as standard.

The characters generally don’t jump right into bed with each other, giving some time to develop the relationship and build the sense of closeness first, which is something I like to see but is often skipped. The way it was handled in Nozomi’s route was especially well-connected to the events that had come before it and ended up being quite funny.

The type of content is fairly standard for a moege visual novel, being fairly vanilla with a slight lean into more fetishistic content. The scenes are relatively long and come packed with affectionate dialogue. They’ve had mosaics removed, and the details underneath all look as they should.

Tamaki's Introduction CG in Lovepical-Poppy!

Odd Expressions, Silly Sounds, and Whimsical Words

LOVEPICAL-POPPY! is quite a recent visual novel, with the original version launching in 2024. The resolution is only 720p, but there are plenty of sprites, funny expressions, and other graphics used. It’s somewhat animated, with blinking eyes, and occasional use of expression changes and sprite movement in the middle of line reads. It’s all used quite well to create a lively feeling that fits the comedic tone.

Each main heroine gets 17 CGs each, each sub-heroine gets 7 each, and there are 3 group ones. Most have multiple variations. It’s a good amount for the length of the visual novel, which took me 26 hours to complete as a relatively fast reader.

The 24 pieces of music fit the tone well, underlining both the comedic moments and rarer serious scenes. Sound effects are often used well for comedic effect, along with sudden changes.

All of the characters are voiced, other than the protagonist as is standard. This includes quite a few side characters who don’t even get proper names. The heroines’ voices all fit their personalities well. Tamaki’s voice was the one that stood out to me the most, perhaps as it was a little raspy and very different from the stereotypical anime voices for smaller heroines. Interestingly, she doesn’t have many visual novel roles.

Suzuka showing she's not a fan of other women in her brother's life

As an interesting addition, while I’ve been referring to the protagonist as “Tetsuya”, as his default name is Tetsuya Yaotome, he’s actually nameable. If you do choose a different name, some of the text and voice lines will be changed, often to omit use of the name. It does mean you’ll miss out on Tamaki’s adorable moments calling out ‘Yaotome-san’ though. As one example, it switched Nozomi saying ‘Yaotome-san!?’ to ‘Wh-Why are you here!?’ when she’s surprised. It’s nice to see they took the effort to not just make it a text change.

The translation read well for the most part. I was a little concerned that it’d be meme-filled as the opening had what seemed to be references to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and the song 99 Problems (and its corresponding meme), but these seemed to be exceptions. Some of the language and slang does stand out to me (as someone who is a bit older than the average visual novel fans now) as a little too catered toward younger Americans, with terms like “fit” used for outfit sometimes, but it was rare enough that I only really noticed when it was used repeatedly. It also somewhat makes sense considering the cast are mostly students in an unspecified but seemingly recent year. It’s also worth a note that it retains honorifics, which I thought fit the setting with a lot of students.

The error-checking was well-done; some rare errors did slip through, as they always do with such a huge amount of text, typically along the lines of missing words or using a similar but incorrect word. Since I started, there’s been at least one patch to fix some of these. Overall, it was a good read and enjoyable localization from my view.

Miu asking Tetsuya about getting lovey-dovey

Verdict

LOVEPICAL-POPPY! doesn’t miss a beat with its comedy, and it’s a fun time whenever spending time with any of the heroines or the other members of the dorm. There are plenty of romantic moments as you get into the heroines’ routes, and the gameplay systems are used well to see their inner thoughts as they fall in love.

The routes and heroines all feel distinct, and while I’d consider some better than others, each has something that I enjoyed about it.
