The Recoil Centurion Gaming Chair has made a bold claim by describing itself as the ‘the ultimate throne for conquering every in-game challenge’. Does this chair by Flair Furniture live up to these claims? I decided to test it to find out.
Some Assembly Required
After lugging the rather large and heavy box inside, I unpacked it all to find 15 types of parts, including the various fittings. An Allen (hex) key was included, along with a page of instructions and quite a lot of protective material.
I found the instructions to be understandable for the most part, with one section that was slightly unclear about the order of assembly. Everything was clearly labeled and there were no parts where I had to deduce just which part the image on the diagram was referring to. The fittings even came in a pack that indicated which letter each was assigned, which was incredibly helpful. As a bonus, an extra one of each fitting was included in a spare parts segment of the pack.
Assembly was mostly a smooth process, but there were a couple of minor snags. Two of the screws didn’t go in smoothly. They would have with enough force, but I used some WD40 lubricant spray to make life easier. There was also a part where it required more force than I expected, which wasn’t a problem as such, but needing to push something that’s on wheels to stay in place can be difficult. I ended up pushing it into a corner, but it’d be helpful to have someone else to steady it.
About 25 minutes later, the Recoil Centurion Gaming Chair was all put together and ready to be used for some gaming. I should note though, that while I’m definitely no DIY expert, I do have a good amount of experience in a couple of related fields so it may have been smoother for me than some others.
The Ultimate Throne?
So, now that it’s assembled, how does the Recoil Centurion Gaming Chair rate as a gaming chair?
First off, to make it clear, this is very much a desk chair. Depending on your room and what you’re doing, this may be suitable, or if you have a lower TV and want to play console games, something like a gamer bean bag may be better for you.
In terms of looks, it’s perhaps a little more plain than some other models of gaming chairs. I see this as a positive though, not due to my personal sense of aesthetics, but because there are no sharp angles where crumbs can fall into or places that are difficult to get into to clean. This extends to the controls to adjust the position having smaller gaps than some other chairs. The flat surface of the seat itself also makes it wider than some chairs which angle the sides, which may help it suit those who require a bigger seat.
It is quite adjustable. It goes higher and lower, the back tilts back so far that it’d be unsafe to actually use it like that, and the arms go forward, back, and twist to an angle. When assembling, you can also slightly adjust how narrow or wide the arms are. The only missing feature here is tilting the angle of the seat, which is on some other chairs.
Sitting on it is comfortable, though the seat is quite firm. It comes with a neck and lumbar pillow, the latter of which I’ve found to be incredibly useful in putting the right amount of pressure on my lower back. It’s better than other lumbar pillows I’ve come across on gaming chairs, perhaps due to the shape and firmness. That said, it doesn’t have a strap or anything else keeping it attached to the chair, so I need to manually place it each time.
It feels like it’s made of high-quality material. The base is metal instead of cheap plastic, as are some of the other parts. The fabric seems tough, which is good considering that my cats clawed holes in my last gaming chair. It’s quite solid and heavy, which is certainly a good thing (aside from when I had to carry it).
One thing that is a pity is that the wheels don’t have a lock on them. On a carpet, you might not even notice, but on a solid floor, it’s easier to inadvertently move. This isn’t much of a problem due to the weight of the chair, but it feels like it’d be an easy improvement.
Verdict
The ultimate throne is unfortunately somewhat of an overstatement, but the Recoil Centurion Gaming Chair is certainly a good piece of furniture. It has some weaknesses but beats comparatively priced gaming chairs in other areas.
