The PlayStation 5 controller is one of my favorites, but it does have a major issue – battery life. It spends so much of its time on charge between marathon sessions of JRPGs and Visual Novels that it’s worth having a more convenient way to charge than having a cable laying over the desk. The Gioteck Solo Charging Stand For PS5 makes life easier.
What Do You Get?
The Gioteck Solo Charging Stand For PS5 (or Gioteck Duo Charging Stand For PS5) lets you charge one or two PlayStation 5 controllers at a time, depending on which model you have. This review is looking at the Solo model but will mention the Duo occasionally. There’s also an XBox Series S|X / XBox One version (pictured below) if that’s of interest.
The box includes the charging stand itself, a set of faceplates, and a USB-C to USB-A cable. No socket is included, but it can be powered via the PlayStation 5 or another USB power source. A socket would have been a nice inclusion here, especially as the PlayStation 5 doesn’t have many USB ports.
The basic setup is easy. It’s just a dock connected to a cable and then connected to a power source in terms of getting it to work.
Convenient Features
This is a cradle-type charger. It’s easy just to place the controller onto it and it’ll start charging. After it makes contact, the controller is held in place well, which has been an issue with some chargers.
Unlike the competing Numskull Charging Dock, the Gioteck Solo Charging Stand For PS5 charges from the controller’s contracts on the bottom of the controller, so there’s no need to use any inserts into the USB port or similar. It’s much more convenient in that way.
An LED on the front indicates the charging status, which is always a helpful feature. It’s yellow when charging and blue when charged. On the Duo model, there are individual icons for each controller.
I was surprised to note that there is an extra USB-C port on the back. This allows for charging an extra controller or another device. As it requires a USB-C to USB-C cable (not included), I couldn’t test it out. A USB-A port would have been more useful here, but it’s not a feature often included on other devices, so it can’t be held against it.
Customization and Appearance
One nice touch here is that the Gioteck Solo Charging Stand For PS5 includes six faceplates. If you’ve bought one of the official PS5 Console Covers, the colors here match the ones currently on offer. There is certainly a lot of choice here.
It’s an easy snap-off, snap-on system. It took me a few seconds to figure it out and replace the default white with purple.
The plastic itself is sturdy enough, though still appears somewhat cheap. It is a budget accessory, so this isn’t surprising. More positively, having the controller stand up outlining the charger does appear quite nice.
Verdict
The Gioteck Solo Charging Stand For PS5 easily fits in the cheap and cheerful box. Despite this, it looks good and makes charging that bit more convenient. There are areas for improvement, but it’s certainly a good charger considering the price. This isn’t surprising considering it describes most of Gioteck’s accessory ranges.
