Adult Game Indie Review

A Simple Life with My Unobtrusive Girl – Review | An Unobtrusive Sister Life Sim

A Simple Life with My Unobtrusive Girl is an adult roguelite roleplaying game made by the indie development team NLCH and published under Saikey Studios. The story follows the son of an alchemist and his efforts to traverse the Abyss in search of a cure for his adopted little sister’s illness. It features fully detailed sprites for the little sister, pixel graphics for the dungeon-slash-exploration segments, and animated assets for the “sister life-sim” portion of the game. A Simple Life with My Unobtrusive Girl is scheduled to release sometime in Q2 2026 according to their Steam page (listed as the all-ages version, A Simple Life with My Unobtrusive Sister), but an early release version is available to purchase on NLCH’s itch.io page, with demos available on both platforms. As of writing this review, the game is currently on version 0.95D.

Against all odds, the world has once again come together to land me a little sister game. Funnily enough, the more I play them, the more I warm up to the idea of the genre itself. There is a certain comfort in having someone near you who is both annoyingly bratty yet adorably relies on you, and I feel like that’s one of the charms of this particular heroine type. So when presented with the opportunity to once again be a dependable big brother, who am I to refuse?

Being familiar with the artist NLCH (or niliuchahui, as they’re known elsewhere), I have high expectations for the game’s overall artistic direction. But when it comes to adult RPGs, while the art does play a substantial part in sculpting the experience, there’s always a certain balance between story and gameplay that needs to be there to make the title good. Can A Simple Life with My Unobtrusive Girl match up to that?

To all big brothers out there, there’s another little sister that needs your help! It’s time to gather your things and dive into the unknown to give your Unobtrusive Girl a life she deserves!

A Simple Life with My Unobtrusive Girl is set in a fantasy world many years after heroes felled the Demon King that terrorized humanity. Although the world was at peace ten years ago, an area known as the Abyss suddenly appeared, beckoning adventurers to explore it for treasures hidden amongst its unknown dangers. In this alternate version of reality, the game opens up with a scene showing a dying alchemist and his son, Kuroha. With his last few breaths, he entrusts Kuroha with the quest to find a cure for his adopted sister Mio’s unknown illness. This quest will eventually lead Kuroha to venture forth through the Abyss with the hope of finding a miraculous compound that can heal anything.

The only problem? Kuroha needs to get home safely, because if he doesn’t, Mio will be sad. And no proper Onii-chan makes his little sister cry!

Options in the life sim portion of gameplay

The Story is in the Simulation

The above synopsis of A Simple Life with My Unobtrusive Girl details the story as it was presented in the first five minutes of the game. After this brief section of the game, there aren’t any significant additions to the established storyline aside from scattered lore drops from non-player characters (NPCs) and items that help progress the life simulation portion. There are some silly references found within the sim portions for story reasons and some random world events, which do help add a bit of nuance to the setting itself, but none of them expand on the family’s history, their identities, and the state of the world outside of their family’s property and the Abyss. Instead, any semblance of progression is found in changes that happen in the life simulation gameplay as you progress through the game.

The “sister life-sim” or simulation portion of the gameplay itself isn’t very complex on the face of it. You get a set amount of time every evening and can spend it on activities such as watching TV, playing games, and so on with Mio. Each action has a chance to raise her affection or libido, so there’s a level of random chance involved. Some of the options are minigames, but even those aren’t very interactive for the most part. There is some motivation to try out the different activities though. Each type of activity is linked to different unlockable scenes and items earned from the RPG gameplay. As well as that, you may notice some patterns in the stat increases as you experiment.

Progressing through events in the simulation portion of the gameplay, aside from obtaining an item related to curing Mio, doesn’t really include anything significant to the overarching plot. Instead, the sense of progression is gained by showing relationship growth and milestones. As you play, you’ll unlock scenarios between Kuroha and Mio that range from silly banter to intimate encounters, sometimes crossing sibling boundaries into sexual encounters. More than anything, the story revolves around this budding relationship between the two, with Mio’s interactions and lines adapting to how much Kuroha has curried favor with her through his actions and choices. This also forms the basis for the roguelite RPG portion’s gameplay loop, as most of the items used in the simulation gameplay portion come from exploring the Abyss.

Love is Measured in the Number of Heart Symbols

Speaking of the progression system, A Simple Life with My Unobtrusive Girl allows Kuroha to monitor his current relationship with Mio through the use of an interactive UI that utilizes heart symbols as indicators. These hearts come in two colors, red and purple, which indicate how affectionate Mio is towards Kuroha and how willing she is to engage in increasingly intimate situations with him. Red hearts serve as the base level of affection, increasing every time the bar under the hearts fills up. These red hearts can subsequently transform into purple hearts the more lewd acts Kuroha performs with Mio. The indicator for this is a percentage that, if it hits 100, turns an existing red heart into a purple one. These are important to note because the game system checks for these parameters when deciding which variation of a scenario to show.

The method of increasing these hearts is fairly straightforward: spend time with Mio during the “sister life-sim” portion of the gameplay, and it’ll naturally increase depending on the nature of what you’re trying to do. Sometimes fulfilling certain conditions can increase the indicators by a large amount, while some circumstances can also force them to decrease. The activities around the heart system mainly involve features such as the cooking mini-game and the simulation events as explained above, but there are a few additional items that can drop during dungeon exploration that can also help raise Mio’s affection.

An important thing to note though is that most of these activities take place during the latter part of an in-game day, specifically from 5PM onwards. A Simple Life with My Unobtrusive Girl makes use of an in-game date system to split the two game modes, roguelite RPG and simulation, into clearly separated portions. Each day lasts a variable amount of time from anywhere between 7AM to 1AM, depending on the events that trigger, and each action Kuroha does costs a certain amount of minutes or hours that advances the day. This introduces a sort of minor resource management aspect to the overall gameplay loop; given that some events only last until the end of a day, Kuroha must properly plan his activities to make good use of the opportunity so that he doesn’t have to wait for the next blue moon to try his hand at it again.

Kuroha dedicates the earlier half of his days to exploring the Abyss, an area swarming with dangerous monsters but home to incredible alchemic material. This area manifests as a 2D pixel map upon which Kuroha can interact with objects to gather treasure or fight enemies for a chance to drop items from their loot pool. Within the map, players move using their WASD keys and the mouse to actively weave and bob around enemy attacks and deal damage to them. Because it makes use of real-time inputs for Kuroha’s actions, the overall gameplay loop feels surprisingly fluid, and by extension, pretty fun to engage in.

Items and equipment

This exploration and combat gameplay portion follows a similar system to many RPGs; Kuroha can equip a limited number of items, specifically one weapon and five pieces of gear, to help him on his journey through the Abyss. This equipment gives him stats that help scale up his ATK, HP, Defense, Magic, and other similar parameters. Some of them can even add special passive abilities to Kuroha, such as gliding, faster dashes, and better stealth. Moreover, Kuroha can also pick up consumable items around the map that create various effects, ranging from a five-second bomb to having the ability to reset the entire world spawn. The only problem is that most of the items, including the monster spawns, spawn at random rates and are sometimes dependent on world events. In addition, Kuroha’s own inventory has a cap, with weapons having limited uptime because of the implementation of a durability mechanic. As a result, players will most likely be changing their setup throughout their experience playing the game despite having some permanent currency and items, hence, the claim that it is roguelite.

Expanding a bit on the monsters, an aspect of A Simple Life with My Unobtrusive Girl that I found to be pleasantly surprising was the relative strength of the monsters when compared to Kuroha. Even with stronger items, there were still a number of times when I was caught unawares and punished by mobs of random monsters, instantly downing me due to their high rate of damage. Additionally, there are subtle differences in tiers for monsters, with elite enemies and bosses being a bit more of a challenge compared to the ones readily available on the map. Despite the simplistic design of the game overall, the fluidity of its gameplay makes challenging yourself against bosses that become stronger the more you beat them a pleasantly rewarding experience, even outside of the possible benefits they give for the simulation portion of the game.

With most of the gameplay stuff out of the way, it’s time to focus on the ultimate goal when playing A Simple Life with My Unobtrusive Girl: the adult content. Most of Kuroha’s spoils from his exploration of the Abyss, if not related to improving his RPG build, contribute to unlocking various events between him and Mio. These events are mostly lewd in nature, as Kuroha slowly comes to terms with the fact that he desires Mio as a woman, alongside his treatment of her as his little sister. As a result, most of what will feel rewarding as an achievement will be skinship with Mio during the evening.

When it comes to the quality of the adult material though, I can comfortably say that they are pretty high quality. Most of the lewd scenes with Mio are animated, with different variations depending on the progress of your relationship with her and the items you prepared beforehand. A lot of the initial ones are just peeking and skin exposure, but as you gain more purple hearts, they grow in intimacy and intensity. Even as someone who’s not too keen on the genre, I found most of the content sufficiently exciting.

Despite my overall satisfaction with the adult content though, I feel like it’s a bit off-putting that the continuity of some intimate scenes aren’t exactly set in stone. Depending on what and how many hearts you have, you can have situations where one scene will have a deep kiss considered as significant progress, then on the same day will have more elaborate scenes of carnal intimacy as if they’ve been doing it for a lot longer. For something that’s supposed to serve as the main indicator of whatever semblance of story the game has, it just feels a bit weird that the point at which Kuroha and Mio cross over their sibling boundaries isn’t too well-defined due to the lack of integration of a linear chain of overall events.

News segment

That Can’t Stop Me Because I Can’t Read

As a game in early access, A Simple Life with My Unobtrusive Girl still has a lot of features that are currently in development. When playing through the current version, these are easily noticeable because the game either outwardly tells you that they have yet to be implemented or denies you access to particular areas and choices. Sometimes they will even still be in Chinese. So in full honesty, while the game does offer a lot in its current state, there’s also still a lot left to finish from the developer’s side because the overall product doesn’t feel as cohesive as it should be.

Regardless, the NLCH team is pretty active in terms of updating. Upon purchasing the early access version of the game, should there be any updates on the game’s build, the application itself will initiate a prompt to upgrade to the next version. Additionally, some in-game items, such as the Adventurer’s Handbook and the Bunny Map, are great trackers for what content is currently available. Besides being important resources because of how random some of the goalposts are for particular advancements (both in the simulation and in the Abyss), they also share items and areas that are planned for future releases of the game. As a player, it’s pretty exciting being able to peek at it!

Related to the aforementioned guides, I do wish that there was an in-game journal or achievement system that helped you track what you’ve viewed and what else you’ve yet to do. With all the available features in the game, it’s a little bit overwhelming trying to figure out what else you have to do, given that the game has a never-ending roguelite gameplay loop. A few hints here and there (or even a gallery!) would be great as a quality-of-life function.

Localization issues in A Simple Life with My Unobtrusive Girl

Art and Music

A Simple Life with My Unobtrusive Girl has incredible art assets littered around the game, from the cute portraits and animations featuring Mio and Kuroha’s daily life up to the nicely done pixel artwork of enemies and area maps. Playing the game is a relaxing experience, with most of the interface retaining that cute RPG feel despite the rather adult-oriented content that the simulation portion features. The UI is interactive in a nice way, with statuses and flair being displayed through hovers rather than clunky buttons. And the music, while scarce in number of tracks, isn’t annoying to listen to across long time periods and is appropriately cute and/or exciting whenever appropriate.

If I were to nitpick anything from the team’s incredible work, it would probably be the change in styles in between the character portraits, the sprites, and then the animation. All of them have their individual charms, but because they look quite different from each other, despite how attractive Mio looks in all of them, it ends up being a little bit distracting whenever the style shifts. Regardless, the overall art direction and music assets used contribute to the feeling of consistency when it comes to the game’s premise and its target audience.

Verdict

A Simple Life with My Unobtrusive Girl is a deceptively fun RPG with life simulation and roguelite elements that will keep you busy for many hours. Even if the current version is still unfinished, the amount of content that’s currently under development for an eventual release in the future makes the title an exciting one to look out for. There are some other areas that could use some improvements, such as the overall storyline and the in-game indicator for various kinds of completion. But what the game currently offers is satisfying in its approaches to interactive adult content and a simple yet amply challenging action game. I’d recommend the game to people both new and familiar with the genre, but who are looking for that additional sultriness that adult-oriented media offers.

It might be too soon to decide whether or not the complete game will be good or to assign it a score due to the unfinished nature of the title, but I’m very much looking forward to what else NLCH has in store for all of Mio’s Onii-chans out there.
