Nook News – 6/11/24 | Summer Game Fest 2024 and the closure of Gainax

While Geminism’s impending English release was announced back in 2022 by Craftwork, we finally have more information on it.

Shiravune has announced that they will be releasing this as the English publisher. The release date is yet to be announced, but it will be coming to Steam, Johren, and other unannounced platforms. Geminism won multiple awards in the 2023 Moe Game Awards.

The game is CRAFTWORK’s first new visual novel after two decades and are renowned for their mastery of atmospheric settings and exploration of dark themes. The game showcases a narrative set against the backdrop of modern-day Tokyo where an altercation between identical twins takes place as two strange men watch on. Unravel the truth behind the twins’ strife and uncover the identities of the ominous strangers in this riveting tale of deformity and divinity.

Shiravune has announced that Real Anime Situation! 2 (also known as Real Eroge Situation! 2 and Real Hentai Situation! 2) will be released on 25th June, 2024.

Tooru’s got a secret–a secret journal, to be exact. Thanks to his overactive imagination and way too much pent-up lust, he’s been committing his wildest fantasies to paper since, well, forever. Shiravune have also announced the release date of NYO-NIN-JIMA -My New Life in Charge of a Tropical Island- from the developers at Paco Paco Soft. It will be coming to a variety of storefronts, also on 25th June, 2024.

Though he has no regrets about losing his job, he was still worried about his future. NekoNyan have announced that the Aoi Tori Steam release is finally coming and will be released on 28th June, 2024. It will require a free 18+ patch to access all routes, including only the Mary route by default.

Kirihara Academy for Girls, a missionary boarding school located in the remote Japanese mountains. It’s here we find our protagonist, Shiratori Ritsu, the sole male allowed on campus and the school priest. He has the power to bring bliss to those he touches, and that ability is enhanced if the contact is sexual in nature. Never once has he set foot outside the academy grounds, which protect him from demons lusting after him. But the girls of this academy come to him, believing he’s their guardian angel, and he obliges. For he is burdened by the death of a girl, which strengthened his resolve to make others happy.

We recently reported that Kanon is getting an English and Chinese release on Steam. Prototype have now announced that the Nintendo Switch version will be getting an update to include these too.

While an exact release date still isn’t known, the Kanon website now states that the Steam release will be in June, 2024.

In what’s quickly becoming a tradition, Geoff Keighley hosted his annual Summer Game Fest that showcased new updates and announcements for upcoming games. There’s quite a lot to unpack, so let’s get right to it:

Game Science’s entry in the action RPG genre, Black Myth: Wukong is very quickly approaching, so we got a brand new trailer ahead of its August release. Unfortunately, this came with the announcement that the Xbox Series X and S versions will no longer be released with the other versions and has been delayed to an unspecified date.

With the first season of content for Street Fighter 6 now over, the obvious question for fans of the long-running franchise is: What’s next? Capcom were happy to answer and unveiled plans for the second season of DLC! This new season brings back fan-favorite characters M. Bison and Elena, but in a first for the mainline Street Fighter series, guest characters will be joining the roster. Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui, legendary fighting game characters from SNK’s Fatal Fury series will be joining the ever-evolving roster later this year.

Dragon Ball fans have been eating well over the last few years, but they’re about to get a new treat with the return of a legendary game series that brought these characters to life back on the PlayStation 2! It’s been a long time since the initial announcement, but Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero just received a ton of information via a brand-new trailer. The trailer highlighted new characters, game modes, post-launch content, and last but not least, the release date.

Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC on October 11th.

Speaking of October releases, another huge game from Japan is releasing on the exact same day this year! ATLUS’ next game, Metaphor: ReFantazio got a brand new trailer that showcased the main battle mechanic of the game: Archetypes. These function as jobs with different roles in combat with the game having over 40 different ones to utilize in combat.

The latest entry in the Fatal Fury series got a few updates with new character reveals and a release window. Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves revealed that B. Jenet and Vox Reaper are joining the roster who were showcased in the most recent trailer.

Digital Eclipse are releasing a brand new 2D beat-’em-up based on a Hasbro franchise many of you are likely very familiar with! Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind brings offline and online multiplayer action in a charming pixel art style that adapts the characters and enemies from the classic TV series.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind is coming to PC in 2024. No console versions have been announced at this time.

Announced all the way back in 2021, we finally got an update on Slitterhead! This new game comes to us from Keiichiro Toyama, the creator of Silent Hill, and is set in the city of Kowlong. The main mechanics sees you taking control of an entity named Hyoki, who needs to inject themself into human bodies to take on monsters called the Slitterheads, who take on the forms of humans to disguise themselves. The game surprisingly has a pretty large action focus with you taking on the Slitterheads in direct combat.

The year of Shadow the Hedgehog continues with more reveals for Sonic X Shadow Generations! The re-release of Sonic Generations will add new stages featuring Shadow and sees him exploring levels from his past to confront an old foe, Black Doom. This new version will also add an open-zone environment inspired by Sonic Frontiers that Shadow can explore.

Sonic X Shadow Generations releases for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC on October 25th.

Palworld is getting a brand new update later this month! This new update will bring with it a new island inspired by Japan: Sakurajima. This new location will add brand new Pals to capture and utilize, and you’ll need them to take on the new Leader and Faction. This update will also allow you to take on the Leaders of existing Factions on a harder difficulty.

The Sakurajima update for Palworld will be available on June 27th.

We just got yet another trailer for Monster Hunter Wilds after the PlayStation State of Play last week! This new trailer also came with the announcement that the game will feature cross-play support and that the next trailer for the game will be revealed at GamesCom later this year.

To close out the Summer Game Fest showcase, S-GAME released a brand-new trailer for their action RPG game, Phantom Blade Zero! We got a showcase of the game’s fast-paced combat, which will be fully playable at various events throughout the year.

Not to be outdone, Microsoft hosted its own Xbox Showcases last Sunday, and it also came with some game announcements and updates:

The third entry in id Software’s DOOM reboot was announced and is titled DOOM: The Dark Ages! This new entry is actually a prequel to the critically acclaimed DOOM (2016) and aims to tell the origin of the DOOM Slayer’s rage. This time around, the game is going for more of a medieval art direction, but it’ll still be showcasing awesome elements like the Atlan mech and even a Mecha Dragon.

A brand new turn-based RPG is in the works, but it might not be from a studio you recognize. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 comes to us from Sandfall Interactive and puts you in the shoes of the members of Expedition 33 on a quest to kill the Paintress to ensure she can never paint death again. The game is set in a twisted version of France and sees you exploring gorgeous environments while taking on adversaries with turn-based combat mechanics any RPG fan will surely be familiar with.

Konami made a surprise appearance with a brand-new trailer for the remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater! We got a brief look at some of the cutscenes and gameplay from this classic PS2 title, but now with cutting-edge visuals.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC. No release window was announced at this time.

The development of this game has ironically been in the dark for quite a while, but we finally have our first proper look at the new Perfect Dark game! This new entry is being developed by Crystal Dynamics and sees you playing as Joanna Dark, an agent for dataDyne in a world affected by something known as The Cascade. The game is played in first-person where you’ll be using a variety of spy gadgets to infiltrate various locations, while also providing options for both stealth and louder forms of combat.

Perfect Dark arrives for Xbox Series X and PC. No release window has been announced at this time.

Mecha fans; this next one’s for you. Mecha BREAK is a multiplayer mech action game developed by Amazing Seasun. This fast-paced action game gives you the ability to pilot your own fully customizable mech in a mix of ground and air combat. Whether you want to keep things at a distance or go close quarters, this 3v3, 6v6, and 60-player battle royale game will certainly keep you on the edge of your seat. If you’d like a chance to play the game early, we’ll be getting a beta for the game sometime in August.

The collaboration between Bethesda and Lucasfilm got a brand-new trailer! Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is a first-person adventure game where you take on the role of the titular character in a brand-new globetrotting adventure set between Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade. Solve puzzles, explore environments shrouded in mystery, and partake in high-stakes action with Indiana Jones’ iconic whip.

We’re getting a brand new soulslike game from Leenzee Games! WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers is set in the land of Shu during the Ming Dynasty that’s infested by a horde of strange creatures. Play as an amnesiac pirate warrior on a quest to uncover your lost memories while tackling the many dangers you’re sure to encounter.

We got our first look at gameplay for the latest Assassin’s Creed game! Assassin’s Creed Shadows allows you to play as both the skilled shinobi assassin Naoe and the powerful samurai Yasuke in a lush open world set in feudal Japan. Grow your own hideout and shinobi league while enjoying the mix of unique combat styles both characters provide.

Closing out the Xbox Showcase was the announcement of a new game in a popular Xbox franchise! Gears of War: E-Day got a cinematic trailer to announce the title, with the game taking place 14 years before the events of the original Gears of War and sees the return of Marcus Fenix.

Gears of War: E-Day is coming to Xbox Series X and PC. No release window was announced at this time.

Outside of the conferences, we got some other gaming announcements too this week. The first is confirmation for when we’ll be getting new content for Persona 3 Reload! The final piece of content coming to the game and the largest one, Episode Aigis -The Answer- got a new trailer that announced the release date: September 10th.

It wasn’t confirmed for a while, but we finally have word that the brand-new Hunter X Hunter game is coming to the West! The game will be published by ArcSystemWorks with development handled by 8ing in this 3v3 fighting game similar in style to Marvel vs. Capcom and Dragon Ball FighterZ. What’s more, we got a new trailer announcing that Bisky will be joining the game’s roster.

SEGA’s Like a Dragon series has been going from strength to strength lately, so why not adapt the story into live-action? Well, that’s exactly what’s happening, as we’re getting a live-action series later this year! The series will be directed by Masaharu Take with six episodes set to release on Amazon Prime.

Like a Dragon: Yakuza premieres on October 24th.

Anime News:

A legend in the anime industry is sadly no more, as Gainax has filed for bankruptcy and has had to close its doors. The reputation of this studio precedes itself, with them being responsible for some of the most influential anime series ever made. Examples include Neon Genesis EvangelionGunbuster, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, FLCLTengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, and more. While some of the rights to their properties have been transferred to Studio Trigger, the others will be assisted by Studio Khara to transfer them to suitable owners.

The final installment of the Sailor Moon remake is finally making its way to the West this year! Sailor Moon Cosmos The Movie is a film adaptation of the final arc of the story, the Shadow Galactica arc. While this two-part film was released in Japan last year, it will be available to watch via Netflix on August 22nd.

After the successful release of the movie earlier this year, it was only a matter of time before we’d hear of the return of Spy X Family‘s anime adaptation. We recently got the news we were all expecting, as a third season of the Spy X Family anime has been confirmed in the form of a new key visual, although no release date was announced at this time.

The sequel to Hiro Mashima’s Fairy Tail will soon be getting adapted to animation! Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest sees the cast from the original series returning, with us getting a new trailer for the adaptation that also reveals the opening theme song performed by Da-iCE.

The voice for one of anime’s most iconic femme fatales is sadly no longer with us. Eiko Masuyama, the voice of Fujiko Mine from Lupin the Third passed away on May 20th due to pneumonia. We at NookGaming send our condolences to Masuyama’s friends and family.

Upcoming Releases:

The Monster Hunter spin-off that was previously stuck on the Nintendo 3DS is finally coming to other platforms this week! Monster Hunter Stories is unlike any entry in the series prior. Rather than just hunting monsters, you instead help raise and train them to aid you in battles and explore the world.

Monster Hunter Stories launches for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC on June 14th.
