Oedo Trigger VR!! takes being popular with women to the extreme. It might be the game for you if you ever wanted hordes of women throwing themselves at you, pushing you down, and then… well, you can take a guess where this fantasy leads.
While the idea may remind you of Gal*Gun’s various VR offerings, there are some notable differences here. One of which is that this becomes an adult game with a patch.
Transported to the Past
While Oedo Trigger VR!! does have a story, there’s not a whole lot to it. Between scenes, we see some dialogue with the local guardian demon. She explains that she’s transported you back to the Edo period to help take care of a problem.
A mysterious fog has appeared which has affected the women. They’ve all squeezed all the local men dry, leaving only the women running around. It’s time for you to use your FPS skills and shoot them all, which restores reason to their minds (along with removing their clothes).
If you fail, you’ll be the next one to suffer the same fate as those men.
While the story of Oedo Trigger VR!! is quite minimal, I should note that the dialogue and other text such as instructions have been quite poorly localized. There are quite a few grammar issues, typos, phrasing that is clearly that of a non-native speaker, and outright incorrect lines. As one example, ‘you impressed’ is written instead of something along the lines of ‘You’ve impressed me’ or ‘I’m impressed’.
Shooting Up Edo
Of course, as with most VR games, Oedo Trigger VR!!’s gameplay is by far the most important part. Unfortunately, I’d have to say it’s rather mediocre.
The basic idea of gameplay is that you move around a level, shooting the hordes of girls until they fall down. There are mechanical issues with both of these. Smooth locomotion movement is incredibly slow. Upgrades eventually become available, but even then it’s slow. Teleport is an option, but it’s not exactly fast either. The basic shooting is fine for the most part, though the reload at the waist feels a little imprecise at times. You come equipped with a main and sub-weapon, but the first sub-weapon (a basic handgun) has terrible tracking. Other handguns seem fine, but this one was consistently floating in all directions.
Another thing that felt unusual relating to the weapons is the weight of the grenade. It feels like the throwing physics are off in terms of motion and arc. On top of that, I’ve thrown grenades into crowds and had some escape unharmed somehow.
There are some fun features in Oedo Trigger VR!! Crotch shots (instead of headshots) are called ‘hentai shots’ and they build up a meter for a special which gives unlimited bullets, increased fire rate, and slows down time. Building this up, and then taking down as many as possible can be fun. It’s possible to continue building up meter in this mode too.
There is a small collection of weapons and skill upgrades to buy. Many of these are locked behind certain achievements, but they come naturally as playing. This did give some feeling of progression. Sub-weapons never felt too useful though and I barely ever used throwables.
Just the general gameplay of being surrounded and trying to move to stay out of the enemies’ reach while shooting them is fun too.
There are 37 stages to play through, which is a good amount. Goals are varied too. There’s nothing too special, but it has a nice mix of fighting through the level to reach a certain point, survive x amount of time, defeat x enemies, and so on. Levels have bonus money and special gauge power-ups dotted throughout.
Horny Women of Edo
With the patch, the clothes all come flying off quickly in just a few shots and they often seem to get knocked down into a lewd pose, such as legs open. Mosaics are in place, which isn’t unsurprising as this is from a Japanese developer.
On the other side, you can get knocked down too. This leads to a third-person view of your character (an outline with a mosaiced dick) being put into a position with an enemy or two. They might be sitting on your face, smothering you with their chest, or taking similar actions. I found I wasn’t getting knocked down often as it is a reasonably easy game, so I didn’t see these scenes too often, but there are a lot of different types. You need to repeatedly press the trigger to get back up.
One thing worth praising is the variety of the character models. There are tons of different hairstyles, clothes, and other design features. A lot of them felt reminiscent of popular characters in hentai manga.
There’s a gallery where you can dress (or undress) these characters, designing your own from all the various parts which is a nice feature. You can then play the unlocked sex animations with the character designed.
The adult content is probably the main attraction of Oedo Trigger VR!!, which is a pity in a way as I had higher hopes for the gameplay.
As a note, there is very little in the way of voicing for the women, both in the story and gameplay. You won’t be hearing much in the way of moans and such, but just the occasional soundbite. I did have to laugh when I heard one say ‘Yosh’, reminding me of a very different character from Sonic Adventure 2.
Verdict
While it does have some good points and the adult content has obviously been a focus, Oedo Trigger VR!! just doesn’t have good gameplay. Lots of small but important issues bring it down significantly. The movement and shooting are the most important of these, but it could’ve been better in so many ways.
This is even more disappointing since it could have been a good alternative for the somewhat similar Gal*Gun 2 VR, which no longer works with modern VR equipment without workarounds.
